Bonding is a procedure used to repair fractured, chipped, or decayed teeth. Your tooth might get disfigured, or develop a cavity as a result of an injury or decay. Bonding is used to restore such teeth to shape and strengthen the tooth so that it resumes its normal functions.

Bonding enhances your cosmetic appearance by repairing damaged teeth, as well as disguising colored surfaces of the tooth. The bonding procedure is quite simple and does not involve any incisions or drilling. If the damaged tooth is still properly rooted in the jaw bone, bonding is an appropriate alternative.

The Bonding Procedure

Bonding simply involves rebuilding your damaged tooth using composite resin. Our dentist will first clean your teeth thoroughly and remove any films or stains that might be on them. If the tooth is decayed, the dentist will have to remove the decay first.

The composite resin to be used has to match the color of your teeth. Our dentists have a shade guide with which they choose the correct composite resin for you. The surface of the tooth has to be etched and made rough so that the composite resin can adhere to it. A liquid conditioner is used to cement the resin onto the tooth.

The complex part of the process is modeling and properly shaping the resin. The process has to restore the ordinary shape of the tooth. The resin is then hardened into place using a beam of UV radiation. The radiation strengthens the resin into position as well.

Further shaping is done when the composite resin has completely hardened into place. The tooth is shaped by filing and polishing. The process gives it a perfect shape. The time taken to repair a tooth depends on the amount of damage to it.

Teeth that have undergone bonding can function just like ordinary teeth. You might want to avoid chewing hard food for a while though. It would help if you also avoided beverages such as tea and coffee that could stain your teeth during the first 48 hours after the procedure.

Merits of Bonding

As mentioned earlier, bonding is one of the simplest restorative dental procedures. It does not involve any invasive procedures or complex surgeries. Bonding is also quite inexpensive as compared to other restorative dental procedures.

Bonding is quite effective in improving one’s cosmetic appearance. The composite resin used can easily be matched with the surrounding teeth to ensure your teeth look uniform. Bonding is also used to close gaps between teeth. The resin is applied to the sides of the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Bonded teeth are strong and can function normally. Bonding involves repairing the damaged tooth, instead of getting it extracted.
