What Is a Dental Bridge?

When a patient comes into our office with missing teeth, we can close, or bridge, the gaps in the mouth with a dental bridge. This is simply a replacement tooth that will be held into place by the teeth that are on both sides of the gap. Though these bridges can be made out of a variety of materials like gold, most are made out of porcelain, so they match and blend in with your natural teeth.

When Do I Need to Get a Dental Bridge?

Missing a tooth, or sometimes teeth, will affect you in several ways. A dental bridge added in by our team can address some of the changes that you would like made. For example, a dental bridge can help restore your smile and they may help to restore your speech and how well you can talk.

If you are missing more than one tooth in the same area, our team can add in a dental bridge that will assist with how well you can chew. This happens by readjusting the bite to help distribute the force while you chew. There is also the added benefit of putting a bridge in to prevent the teeth left in your smile from moving out of position and causing more damage.

Are There Different Types of Dental Bridges?

There are different types of dental bridges based on the type of dental work you may need. These include implant-supported, Maryland, cantilever, and traditional. Our team can help you decide which one is the right choice for your smile.

The traditional dental bridge is the option we are most likely to recommend to our patients. This consists of the new tooth being held in place with a dental crown cemented onto the nearby teeth. This option works well if natural teeth are on both sides of the missing tooth. The cantilever dental bridge is similar, but we will use this when there is only one natural tooth next to the gap.

We may decide to use the Maryland dental bridge when we need to have a framework attached to the back of your side teeth instead. The implant-supported dental bridge is the option we use when we need to add one implant for each missing tooth to help hold the bridge in place.

A bridge is a useful procedure we offer our clients to help close up any gaps and give them a natural-looking smile. We will sit down with our patients and discuss all the options to find the right bridge for your needs.
